Does where you're born affect your chances of getting scouted?

A long-term goal of ours has been to make sure that we are providing opportunities to young footballer, that might otherwise not have got them. We felt that by having an app, where talented players could upload their highlights, it would bridge that gap and provide more opportunities to get noticed.

So, continuing on this mission, we decided to carry out our own research on all 750 British professional footballers currently playing in the United Kingdom to see if there was a link between the area you’re born and your chances of making it professional.

The results were astounding.

After looking at all players from the Premier League right down to League 2, the areas that produced the most amount of talent were of course some of the biggest cities in the UK.

London, Manchester and Liverpool the top three areas for churning out over 200 professional players. At the other end of the spectrum, East Sussex, Humberside and Devon produced the least amount of players - it’s bad news for you guys living there! Those areas punching above their weight (pros per population) include Essex and Berkshire. If you’re reading this and live in them areas, you have a 1 in 25,000 chance of making it into the professional ranks. Compared to those living in Kent, who have a 1 in 100,000 chance or in other words 0.01% of getting into the beautiful game. Awkward.

We also noticed a correlation between the player’s home areas and the positions they take up on the pitch. You’re more likely to be a defender if you’re from Yorkshire with the likes of John Stones, Harry Maguire, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose all hailing from the West Riding.

Those in dictating play in the middle if you’re from the south with Mason Mount, Harry Winks and Dele Alli paying testament to this. If you’re from London, our research show you probably like bagging goals at the weekend like Harry Kane, Tammy Abraham and Rhian Brewster.

In uncertain times like these, it’s difficult for anyone to get scouted at the minute. But with the Ellevate Football app, we’ve got scouts across five different continents. All you need to do is upload videos of yourself playing and you could be snapped up by a scout.

The best news of all? The Ellevate app is completely free and is available on iOS and Android.
